Renegade Calligraphy takes the reader on a journey where other books on the history of graffiti have neglected to embark. It shows a lesser known approach to the deeper history between this guerilla artform and its distant relatives, blackletter calligraphy and cholo gang writing. It's travels down the long path blackletter calligraphy has taken, exploring how the letterform has been transformed and evolved over the past 500 years into the urban art we see on city walls and trains today. Through this journey a bloodline is traced that reaches from the present day all the way back to Europe in the 1400's, revealing that the heart of wildstyle pumps blood rich in calligraphic DNA. The book also includes a first look at the RC Urban Letterform Project that is being formed as part of Jay Clue's PhD research along with numerous artist interviews and photos including the likes of SNOW, SKORE, STEAM156, and many more.
