If you’re familiar with the 500 rule (or 600, or 400 rule), it’s kind of similar but provides more accurate results, especially with today’s higher megapixel cameras. If you’re not familiar with the 500 rule, then don’t worry! We’re going to cover that too.

A key challenge in night sky photography is achieving correct exposure in conditions with little to no light. The exposure triangle—shutter speed, aperture, and ISO—becomes a delicate balancing act when shooting at night. We can increase the ISO, which can help, but it also introduces more noise the higher we go. The apertures of our lens are limited in how wide they can open. But shooting them wide open also increases coma and can distort the stars. This leaves us with shutter speed. Our first instinct might be to go with the slowest possible shutter to allow the most light to reach the sensor. But since this beautiful rock that we call Earth is flying through space and rotating, if we use a shutter speed that’s too slow, we’ll start to notice motion blur in the stars, or as we in the biz call it, star trails. Star trails are great if that’s what you’re going for. But if you’re looking for a nice, pretty shot of a sky full of stars, using a shutter speed that’s too slow will turn those beautiful points of light into streaks or ovals instead of sharp dots. But don’t worry, there’s an easy way to figure this out! In this week’s quick tip, we’re going to look at how to calculate your maximum shutter speed for nightscape photography and how the NPF Rule helps you capture sharp, pinpoint stars.

style="--awb-text-transform:none;">
The 500 Rule…or 600 rule or 400 rule…

For years, the 500 rule was the go-to standard for quickly estimating the maximum shutter speed you could use before stars begin to trail. To find your shutter speed, simply divide 500 by your lens’ focal length. For the sake of making the math easy, let’s say we are using a 20mm lens. In this case, we’d have: 500 ÷ 20 equals 25 seconds. Simple right? This rule originally started as the 600 rule, which worked well in the early days of astrophotography. However, photographers started to notice the stars beginning to elongate into ovals or tiny dashes when producing larger prints. And thus, the 500 rule was born.

As digital camera technology improved beyond 20 and then 30 megapixel sensors, the same issue arose again. The rule was then adjusted to 400, and so on. Additionally, the 500 rule didn’t really suit cameras with smaller sensors. Nightscape photographers experimented further and found that the 250 rule worked well for APS-C sensors, while 200 is better for Micro Four Thirds sensors. These rules use the same straightforward formula: divide the focal length by the number in the rule, and you have your maximum shutter speed. For example, with an APS-C sensor and a 20mm lens, dividing 250 by 20 yields a maximum shutter speed of 12.5 seconds. But these rules aren’t super accurate, so you will definitely want to experiment and really zoom in on those stars to see how they look in your test shots. In my opinion, these rules serve more as a starting point than a strict rule that yields a very specific result. They also don’t take into account that while cameras may have similar sensor sizes, they can hold wildly different megapixels. For example, both the Sony A7S III and A7R V have full-frame sensors of the same size, but the A7S III holds 12.1 megapixels while the A7R V has 61 megapixels. That’s 5 times more pixels packed into the same sensor size. So, as you can probably imagine, a better formula was needed! Which brings us to the NPF Rule…drum roll please!

Now, before we dive into the NPF Rule, let me preface it by saying this might sound a bit complicated at first. But stick with me to the end because I have a very simple way to handle it. A few years ago, French photographer and amateur astronomer Frédéric Michaud sought a better solution that worked with the vast array of modern cameras and sensors available today. After lots of hard work, he developed what is now known as the NPF rule. The three letters in its name are actually the variables in his equation instead of an abbreviation. They stand for:

N = Aperture (the letter N is used to represent aperture in the optics world)

P = Pixel pitch (essentially the density of pixels on the sensor)

F = Focal length (from the lens you are using)

Frédéric’s formula considers much more than the old 500 rule, including the camera’s sensor size, the lens aperture, and how densely the pixels are packed on your sensor. However, it is more complex and not something you’d want to be scribbling out by hand in the dark like a mad scientist in the night. Luckily, apps like PhotoPills provide quick calculators where you just select your camera, focal length, and aperture, then the app does the rest. In PhotoPills, you can find it inside the Spot Stars pill. As a bonus, PhotoPills can also account for star declination. More on this in a future article, but it essentially indicates how far north or south a star is from the celestial equator, helping us estimate how fast it seems to move through the sky and form trails.

style="--awb-text-transform:none;">
How does the NPF Rule work?

For those who want to understand how it works or just love math, let's dive into the NPF rule. The formula looks like this:

Shutter Speed in seconds = [(35 x Aperture) + (30 x pixel pitch)] ÷ focal length

To figure out your camera's pixel pitch, you'll need to use a separate formula:

Pixel Pitch = (Physical width of camera's sensor in mm ÷ number of pixels in width) x 1000 micrometers (µm)

To determine the pixel pitch for my Sony Alpha 1, which has a sensor size of 35.9 x 24 mm and a maximum image resolution of 8640 x 5760 pixels, I would use the formula like this:

4.16 = (35.9 ÷ 8640) x 1000 µm

This shows that the pixel pitch of the Sony Alpha 1 is 4.16 µm. From here, I could then figure out the NPF formula. If we stick with our same 20mm lens from the other formulas, and let's say we are shooting at an aperture of 2.8, we can find that the maximum shutter speed for this configuration would be 11 seconds. That is a massive difference from the 500 Rule's answer, which gave us 25 seconds! Here's what the formula would look like:

11.14 seconds = ÷ 20

For example, if I know the shot is only going to be used for digital outputs like a post on instagram or a timelapse, then I might increase my shutter from 11 seconds up to 12 or 13. If I think I might print the photo in the future, I’ll stay as close as possible to the NPR Rule’s shutter speed. You’ll want to experiment a bit to see how much you can bend the rule and still achieve results youare okay with. And again, doing math while out on a beautiful night under the stars is probably not something you want to deal with while setting up your shot, so I’d highly recommend downloading PhotoPills. The NPF rule calculator is just one of the many reasons I love that app so much. It’s my go-to for planning shots, scouting locations, and a wide range of other tasks.

To start the series, we are going to jump into a common question I get asked a lot about my underwater photography.

Q: How can I create those dreamy reflections when photographing close to the surface?

This technique is more straightforward than many believe. It requires some practice to master, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to recreate it consistently. Start with the camera positioned just below the subject’s eye level. You have some flexibility here depending on your preferred shot style. Most of the time, I like to shoot slightly below eye level, as it softens the angle and appears more subtle. To capture the reflection, tilt your wrists slightly to point the camera toward the surface—only a few degrees—to avoid the impression of shooting from below. Remember, we’re not aiming for perfect mirror-like reflections. Instead, we want to capture the color variation across the water’s surface, for reasons I’ll explain shortly. I suggest trying different angles to discover the one that gives you the effect and style you’re looking for.

style="--awb-text-transform:none;">
If you’ve learned how to properly shoot from the hip—meaning without looking through your viewfinder or screen—this trick becomes even simpler. You could be snorkeling at the surface and still make the shots appear as if they were taken a few feet underwater. As you improve, you’ll also be able to track your subject and change angles throughout the shot to quickly capture different compositions of the same moment.

Adding surface reflections to your shot helps create depth and leading lines in your photos. These reflections can guide the viewer’s eye toward the main subject, drawing them into the image. Additionally, reflections aren’t limited to only shooting near the surface; the same technique can also be used at greater depths to add texture to the background. This enhances the composition by making it more dynamic than a flat blue background. The textured background provides dimension and depth, helping the subject stand out and appear to pop off the background.

But before we begin, I want to tell you a little bit about the new series. Quick Tips is a collection of short articles that are straight to the point and give you my best advice on questions we often see in the industry. The idea is to build out a resource over time of all these common questions in photography & cinematography that you can easily reference. So check back soon for more, and follow me on Instagram or Facebook to get the latest updates! Now, let’s jump into this month’s quick tip.

Should I shoot RAW or JPEG for Underwater Photography?

For those looking for the quickest answer, you should always choose to shoot in RAW. But let’s explore both formats and understand why utilizing camera RAW is the better option for photography. To start, RAW and JPEG are file formats in which your camera can capture photos. You’re probably familiar with JPEGs since they are prevalent in the digital age. We use them to post to Facebook or Instagram or send a quick screenshot via email, and so on. One of the reasons they are so popular is that they are compressed files, so they tend to be relatively small in file size. However, this compression is not ideal for photography, especially when editing the images. JPEGs essentially bake in the camera settings, white balance, sharpness, and color profiles. They also tend to mess with the dynamic range of an image due to the compression process. This causes us to lose some of the different tones and the gradation of highlights and shadows. On the plus side, though, photos shot in JPEG are ready to share straight from the camera. But with that being said, most photographers would prefer to tweak their images anyway in post-processing software such as Adobe Lightroom, Luminar, or even Apple Photos.

class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column">

Camera RAW files are essentially higher quality and can be thought of as utilizing all the raw data from the capture versus working with a finished product like a JPEG. This means RAW file sizes will be larger than JPEGs and require some photo editing software to convert them into a shareable file like a JPEG or PNG. But this also means you have incredible opportunities to capture and edit the photo. In terms of shades of color, JPEGs are 8-bit and can only contain around 16 million colors with 256 tonal values per channel. In contrast, a 12-bit RAW image could hold upwards of 68 BILLION colors and 4,096 tonal values per channel. Many newer cameras utilize 14-bit and even 16-bit RAW images, pushing those billions into the trillions. This means we can achieve much more realistic shading and color tones. We can already see a gigantic jump in what we can play with when switching to RAW, just in terms of color and tones.

RAW files also offer a wider dynamic range. This means you have a better chance of recovering the highlights and shadows of an image that is underexposed or overexposed compared to JPEG. Camera RAW images commonly utilize uncompressed or lossless compression, meaning they will not suffer from the messy compression artifacts you might see in JPEGs. They also offer finer adjustment potential when editing the images since none of the settings are baked into the file. If you want to change the white balance (a massive advantage in underwater photography), the color space, or pretty much any other factor of the photo, you can do it with ease. Lastly, one of the lesser-spoken-about advantages of shooting RAW is that you can bake copyright info into the file. So, suppose you have an issue with someone using an image without permission. In that case, it’s easy to prove you are the creator since you hold not only the original RAW file with the copyright owner baked into the file from when the photo was captured.

So, to wrap it up, when it comes to underwater photography or any type of photography, it’s better to choose RAW as it gives us a wealth of benefits that allow us to expand our creativity, improve our edits, and protect the ownership of our images. While JPEGs might be great for some other things and will probably play a role in our daily lives for the foreseeable future, RAW is still the best option for photography. We’ve been building this project for a few months now, so I am super excited to be able to talk about it finally! If you haven’t seen the launch video yet, check it out on Facebook, YouTube, or Instagram. Every month, we’ll be holding a session on Scuba Diving Magazine’s social media to answer your questions about photography, storytelling, and cinematography. If you want composition tips, to learn about camera gear, or even if you just want to finally put to rest if pineapple belongs on pizza – just send in your questions by commenting on the posts or visiting this link. Each month, we will pick our favorite question to answer properly in a full-length article on ScubaDiving.com

For the first article, I answered a question from Kristin, Scuba Diving Magazine’s master content ninja, on one of my all-time favorite tips for getting the best shots underwater. You can check out the full article right here on their website, free of charge. We’ve already seen a bunch of great questions coming in and have been answering them on Instagram and Facebook stories. I can’t wait to see what other questions you ninjas come up with!

This is a question I have been asked more times than I could count. We see it on Facebook groups, message boards, and Instagram almost daily. Every time I do an ‘Ask Me Anything’ session, it’s almost guaranteed it will be asked multiple times. But I understand why. There are so many options and differing viewpoints online, making it quite difficult for new photographers to know what to spend their hard-earned money on. So to help make things easier, I’m going to outline my top picks for the best underwater camera for beginners, as well as the reasons why I recommend them. I’ll also link to where you can purchase them so you can make sure you are getting exactly what you need.

Before we get started, I want to mention that I am writing this article for people who are actually looking to learn photography and get awesome shots. Not for those who just want to put the camera in ‘auto’ mode and push buttons, hoping for the best. And – spoiler alert – the Olympus TG-6 is not on the list! But I will explain why at the end of this article too. This way you can decide what works best for you. Ready to rock? Let’s jump in!

style="--awb-text-transform:none;">
My Top Pick For Beginners & Those Wanting a Small Rig:
Olympus OM-D E-M10 IV with Octo Housing: $1498 USD

Finding a solid balance between price and quality is probably the hardest entry point for new underwater photographers. No one wants to throw down $10,000 on a massive full-frame rig to find out they don’t really enjoy underwater photography. The Olympus OM-D E-M10 IV strikes this balance almost perfectly, especially when paired with Backscatter’s Octo Housing – and does it for under $1500. That alone is an amazing feat in my opinion, but let’s look at why it’s a great starter camera that you can grow with.

Similar to the Olympus E-PL10 – my previous top pick for beginners, the Olympus OM-D E-M10 IV packs a ton of great features in a very small package. First off, the Olympus OM-D E-M10 IV has a 20.3 megapixel Micro 4/3 Live MOS sensor giving you an extra 4 megapixels over the E-PL10 as well as a better sensor. It boasts an interchangeable lens mirrorless camera body that is only slightly larger than most high-end compact cameras and a wealth of features that can adapt to you as you grow as a photographer. The OM-D E-M10 IV can shoot full manual mode, meaning you will have full control over your images & exposure — something its little brother, the TG-6 lacks. It shoots in RAW for photography which translates to meaning you can properly edit your photos in post-processing software like Adobe Lightroom. It also shoots 4k 30fps for those interested in video and has a solid custom white balance system. For those interested in macro, astro or nightscape photography, you will love its manual focus magnification and focus peaking to help you get those beautiful pin-sharp shots. Plus, the built-in interval timer means no need to buy and carry an external intervalometer for stacking night sky images.

For those looking for a small rig at a great price point, you really can’t beat it. I’ve had a lot of time to play with both cameras showing my photo workshop students how to use them for everything from underwater photography to landscape, astrophotography, underwater modeling and much more. The camera gives great image detail and sharp resolution without blowing out highlights or making the shadows noisy. It also produces nice vibrant colors. Plus, the lens and optics options are unreal for a camera in its class. You have lenses and ports for fisheye (including the Lumix 8mm that I won my first-ever photo award with!), wide-angle zoom, macro, telephoto zoom, and the list just goes on. The Micro 4/3 mount covers a ton of Olympus and Panasonic lenses, so there are a lot of great options. And all of this in a camera only slightly larger than a TG-6? Maybe now, you are starting to see why it’s my recommendation for the best beginner underwater camera.

But let’s look at the housing now. Backscatter pulled out all the stops when creating the Octo Housing for the OM-D E-M10 IV. If you’re not familiar with them, Backscatter is hands down the best underwater camera shop on our planet. Their team tailored the Octo Housing features to get you the best bang for your hard-earned cash. The housing comes stock with a vacuum lock system as well as a strobe trigger for those looking to add lights. To put that into perspective, normally, strobe triggers can run about $300 USD, and vacuum systems can set you back another $300 on top of that. Plus, it comes with everything you need, as well as a bunch of extra accessories, so you are ready to rock! Check out the photo – that’s everything that comes just with the stock housing. You definitely aren’t going to get that from another housing brand. Lastly, it just looks awesome with the black tentacles and white base.

Sony a6700 Camera with 16-50 PZ Lens: $1498 + housing

The new Sony a6700 is an incredible crop sensor mirrorless camera with a wealth of features –including all of the similar features found on the Olympus OMD EM10 IV — but with even better specs! It utilizes a 26-megapixel APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor, and shoots RAW, as well as 4k 120fps video. The a6700 uses Sony’s E mount, which means you have a jaw-dropping array of available lenses to choose from. Additionally, it boasts a 759-point autofocus system that features Sony’s latest artificial intelligence (AI) system, which can recognize and focus an expanded array of subjects from trains, insects, cars, and airplanes. The E-M10 IV utilizes only contrast detection with 121 focus points for comparison. But all of this comes at a higher price tag, with the camera and 16-50mm PZ kit lens retailing for $1498 USD. From there, you will need to add on your lens and an underwater housing which can easily bring your budget upwards of $3000 or more, depending on which housing you choose. But if you have the budget for it, the Sony a6700 is a great camera all around and is considered one of the best crop sensor cameras on the market.

While the Olympus TG-6 is a decent point-and-shoot compact camera with a low price tag, it lacks a lot of the features you’re going to want for photography and videography. But as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Now this section isn’t meant to beat on the TG-6 at all. I’d more like to show you where it lacks in comparison to the Olympus OM-D EM10 IV or Sony a6700 so you can make an informed decision on what you are buying.

To start off, the TG-6 does not offer a manual mode, so you do not have full control over all of your exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO). Instead, you are limited to the camera deciding what the aperture or shutter should be using – depending on which shooting mode you are in. This is never really a good thing, and even more so underwater. The more control you have over your camera, the better your shots are going to be. From a sensor perspective, the EM10 IV’s Micro 4/3 sensor is roughly 6x larger than the TG-6’s sensor. The a6600’s sensor is over 11x larger. That’s significantly larger, resulting in cleaner, sharper images with more dynamic range.

The TG-6 is also a fixed-lens compact camera. In other words, you have a 1 size fits most lens and can not change the lens. This is ok for working with macro subjects using the TG’s great in-camera macro mode, but the camera really struggles with wide-angle and large animals. But what about the wet wide-angle lens for the TG, Jay? It’s sadly not going to compare to using a proper lens and port with better optics like you will find on the OM-D EM10 IV or a6700. Plus, once you add on that wet wide-angle lens, you are already getting really close to the price of the OM-D EM10 IV. You’ll also get better battery life with the EM10 IV or a6700 mirrorless systems, meaning you don’t have to stress about missing shots on a dive.

In my opinion, the Olympus TG-6 is for divers that just want a small, easy-to-use camera that they can just throw in Auto mode and click the shutter button and hope for the best. There is nothing wrong with this at all. Many aren’t really looking to learn photography, and that’s totally fine! The problem I find is that many divers are pushed to the TG-6 from Facebook groups or ‘armchair experts’. Then a few months later, they realize the limitations of the camera and have to go out to buy something new. I hate seeing divers waste money they could have spent on diving if they just had good info upfront. One of the benefits of the TG-6 is that it’s small and easily clipped off to your BCD. So you don’t need to carry it around like a bigger rig. It’s also pretty cheap at around $900 for the camera and housing. But for me, I would just save up a little and grab the OM-D EM10 for $500 more. At least then, I wouldn’t worry about outgrowing the TG-6 in a few months and wanting to buy a new camera. But in the end, it all comes down to which underwater camera system better fits your needs.

When buying an underwater camera there are always 3 things you need to consider. What do you aim to accomplish with it? Do you want to learn to create beautiful photos or cinematic video? Or maybe you just want something to take quick snaps on a dive for memories? Next, you need to decide what type of budget you want to spend on the system. A compact ‘point & shoot’ style system can run you from $700-$1500, whereas a crop sensor mirrorless could run anywhere from $1200 upwards of $6000+. A full-frame mirrorless or DSLR system could run from $5000 to well over $10,000. Once you know your budget & goals, you want to consider next how big of a rig you want to carry and travel with. When you start getting into the larger cameras, the rigs get exponentially larger, which means diving is no longer just diving – it’s shooting photos & video. This is because you now need to carry the rig the entire dive and are have to be focused on the camera instead of just being in the moment. That’s not a bad thing per se, for me, I love photography as much as if not more than, I love diving. But it’s always nice to go for a dive without the camera sometimes to remember why you fell in love with diving in the first place.

So, what should you get? If you want a solid camera and have a budget of $1500, grab the Olympus OM-D EM10 IV with Octo Housing. You won’t regret it. If you have a little more budget, you can add on a strobe or video light or just put that extra cash towards doing a workshop to learn how to use it, or going on a trip to play with your new toy! If you can afford a bigger budget, then I’d hands down go for the Sony a6700. If you don’t really care to learn how to get good shots and prefer to run it in “auto mode” or just want something you can stuff in your pocket or clip to a BCD, then go for the Olympus TG-6 for photo or a Go Pro for video. Want to go all in and learn to shoot professionally? Give me a shout, and I’ll help you build a full frame rig that matches your shooting style.

While photographing models underwater is not something new for me, doing it with halloween costumes was definitely a new adventure with its own challenges. It was incredibly fun to photograph and we were able to capture some great shots. So I thought it would be helpful to look at a few tips for doing a Halloween underwater photoshoot, which in turn could carry over to underwater model photography in general.

class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column">

1. Spend some extra time on your planning.

Like in any form of diving or photography, solid planning is an easy key to success. This shoot started with just the idea of having Kenzo wearing a jackolantern on his head underwater. From there it slowly grew. We began looking for other models to capture different costumes and ideas. Then figuring out what kind of costumes could look good underwater – as well as what we could source in Cabo. Living in Baja can make finding some things pretty trickier so we had to adapt our ideas to what we could actually find locally. Then once the models and ideas were locked in it’s on to logistics. Where are we going to shoot this? Which spot will have the best conditions? How are we going to pull it off? Do we need a boat or can we do it from shore? Freediving or scuba – or both? What other equipment will we need? And so on…

I find the best way to plan a photoshoot is to think through it from start to finish making notes along the way. When I come to a part of the shoot that I don’t have an answer for yet; I write it down as a question in my notes. Then when I have it fully outlined I go back through it again to make sure I didn’t miss anything. These notes also double as a checklist for the photoshoot helping make sure you don’t rock up at the location and realize you’re missing a critical piece of gear. The last thing to consider in your planning stages is that things will change and you need to leave space to maneuver things around. One of the best skills an underwater photographer can have is being able to quickly adapt to changing situations. Remember, we aren’t working in a nice little studio, we are in the ocean and at the whim of mother nature.

2. Think about how colors will look underwater.

Divers & photographers learn early on that colors change drastically underwater – even in very shallow clear water. So, you’ll want to consider this when you are planning your outfits or costumes for the models. For example, a bright red dress may quickly look mud brown underwater if you aren’t using strobes. Or if you are, but the shot is captured in a way that the light from your strobes won’t reach all of the dress then you might end up with a lot of editing to do later in post to match it up. For the underwater Halloween photos we were a bit limited as we wanted to keep to the traditional halloween feel. So we’re looking at orange, black, purple, and maybe bright ghoulish greens or devil reds. Pumpkin orange, similar to red, changes quite quickly underwater looking more faded and dull. But thankfully, it’s also quite easy to bring back in post.

For Marcela’s witch & skeleton outfits, black was the chosen color as it not only fits the traditional theme but contrasts easily making the costume stand out off the background. Kenzo’s pumpkin head we went for ripped up jeans as we don’t really need the viewer to focus on his pants, we want their focus on the pumpkin. style="--awb-text-transform:none;">
3. Imagine how the costumes will work underwater.

This is a bit of a two for one tip. The first thing we tend to think of is how will it look underwater. Such as questioning whether the fabric will flow through the water, or will it become more flat when wet? Or if you will be able to see hidden weights needed to help your model pose? But the second half of this is considering what its properties mean for your models. Can they swim freely in it? Is it going to become very heavy when wet? Does it pose any safety risks for them?

Kenzo’s jack o’lantern head is an actual carved pumpkin – not a halloween mask. When wearing the pumpkin there wouldn’t be room to hide a regulator inside to breath from. Nor could we get a regulator in deep enough from outside to reach his mouth while wearing the pumpkin – so it would need to be shot on breath holds. From a safety perspective this seemingly simple shot just became a lot more complex. It would require dedicated safety divers ready react immediately if there were any issues, as well as a lot more considerations to minimize the risks.

Utilize support divers and put extra attention on safety.

Now this may not be the most fun tip of the article, but it is without a doubt the most important. As photographers we may not always think about extra planning for safety. But when photographing models underwater you need to always put extra attention on the safety of everyone involved. I find the best method is to go back to your original plan and walk through the photoshoot, but this time thinking about what potential risks there are at each step. Then working to find ways to minimize these risks as much as possible.

It’s also great to have some safety support divers on set watching everything and ready to jump in to help out in case of an emergency. They can see things you may miss while you are focused on getting the shot. Additionally they are also a big help with costumes, equipment, or even supplying air. They’re crucial members of the photo team and are always required shooting commercial projects. In our shoot we had 2-3 support divers in water at all times. With the pumpkin head Kenzo had 2 dedicated support divers hovering just out of the camera frame able to supply air or to help him to the surface within a second if it was needed.

Plan your photoshoot to be in shallow water.

Organizing your underwater model photoshoot in shallow water helps to alleviate a lot of headaches as well as minimizing some risks. This will of course be dependent on what you are shooting, but if I have the option, I always aim for shallow water. The light is much better in the shallows giving you more contrast, color, and dynamic range. Plus if you’re like me, I always will choose to shoot natural light over using strobes if the situation allows for it. From a safety perspective, you are closer to the surface in case there is an emergency. It also puts less stress on your models if they are doing breath holds or freediving giving you a few more crucial seconds underwater before they need to grab the next breath.

A good underwater model makes the world of difference.

When it comes to selecting models for underwater photoshoots we need to consider a few additional things besides the normal physical appearance and attributes. The first is how comfortable are they in the water. You could have the most incredible looking model but if he or she is not comfortable working in water it’s going to make your shoot much more difficult to accomplish. If you’re shoot also involves scuba diving or equipment then you are going to want someone that is a certified diver, unless you are an instructor and want to teach them to essentially take them on a Discover Dive to shoot. Having a scuba diver that is experienced, comfortable, and confident in the water goes a long way. Consider how their buoyancy and trim are if you are going to be shooting them in scuba gear for example. Having some one that is experienced usually will mean they have good trim, streamlining, and buoyancy – making them look better in the water.

If your underwater photoshoot is going to be done without scuba gear, then having someone experienced with apnea or freediving will make a massive difference. I’ve done shoots in the past where the models could barely hold their breath for a few seconds making shooting even just below the surface really difficult. We were still able to get good shots in the end but it made it a much longer process and required some extra clever thinking on my part. Whereas if we have a Freediver that is comfortable underwater and can do long breath holds it makes it so much easier. Additionally freedivers tend to look very graceful in the water due to how they train to use long fins and such. In the Halloween shoot, Marcela, is an avid Freediver that is super comfortable underwater and able to hold her breath quite long. This gave me the opportunity to do multiple shots, angles, and ideas on one breath. Then as she went to grab some air, I could check my photos and prepare for the next series of shots. Additionally, a shot like the Pumpkin head requires someone extremely comfortable in the water and also with a solid breath hold as they have no mask, and are wearing a pumpkin on their head. Kenzo is a dive instructor with thousands of dives under his belt, so he is not only very experienced working underwater, he’s also very calm, confident, and comfortable. It made shooting this idea much easier than I was expecting.

class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column">

7. Choose the right gear & settings for the shoot.

Personally I prefer to shoot natural light unless the shoot really requires a strobe. Don’t get me wrong, strobes are amazing pieces of kit – especially the Sea & Sea YS-D3 Lightning strobes. But natural light tends to have a softer and more realistic feel to it. If you decide to shoot natural light though, take some time in the beginning to get your custom white balance as close to perfect as you can. Then keep an eye on it throughout the shoot if the lighting or costumes change. It will save you a bunch of time later in post. One of the other benefits of shooting natural light, if you have bright conditions, is that you can kick the shutter up a bit faster to stop motion as well as use a high speed drive to fire off shots really quickly to grab that one perfect moment when the model is posed perfectly. Remember, it’s not easy for them to walk on the bottom like they would walk down a street. So you want to to be able to grab those perfect moments. This was really apparent in the witch shoot while trying to get a shot of Marcela surfing the broom. She would basically have to ‘jump’ off the bottom bring the broom under her feet and try to ‘surf’ it while it quickly sank below her.

For this shoot I was using my Sony Alpha 1 in a Nauticam NA-A1 housing. The Alpha 1 is a speed demon and capable of firing 30 shots per second and doing 120 focus calculations per second – which means it is actually recalculating focus and exposure four times between every single shot while firing a 30 frame burst. Plus I love the dynamic range and color reproduction of the Sony a1. You can check out my full hands-on review of the Sony Alpha 1 here. My lens of choice for wide angle underwater portraits is the Sony FE 16-35 mm f2.8 GM. I love having a little bit of zoom to it, but also being wide enough that I can be close and cut down the amount of water between me and the model. I’d recommend staying away from fish eye lenses for most model shoots as they will tend to bend the model, which while maybe sometimes it can have a cool effect, most times it’s going to make them look strange.

Photographing models underwater is a lot of fun and really lets you get creative. Especially for us underwater wildlife photographers that are used to waiting to spot an animal then quickly think of how to photograph it in a split second. With underwater modeling we have time to imagine an idea, work out the pose, and then play with multiple angles to try bring that idea to life. One of the benefits of working with humans, at least until I can figure out how to teach sharks how to properly pose! If you’re interested in learning more about underwater photography I highly recommend joining one of my photography workshops or one on one courses. They’re great to really take your photos to the next level in just a few days and are customized based on your skill level – from beginners just starting out to advanced photographers looking to hone their craft.
